Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s flu season has the potential to be more dangerous than ever.
Like COVID-19, influenza affects your respiratory system and is quite contagious. Both viruses are transmitted via respiratory droplets, so good hygiene (such as frequent handwashing with soap and water or rubbing with sanitiser), proper respiratory etiquette (such as sneezing into your elbow or a tissue and disposing of used tissues in a lidded bin), and avoiding contact with others if you are unwell, are vital to stopping the spread of illness. It’s also a good idea to keep your immunity in check by eating well, getting enough sleep, and staying hydrated: your body can’t fight infection with a weakened immune system.
If you were to contract both illnesses at once, there’s an increased risk of developing serious health complications. That is why health officials and medical experts have recommended all Australians get their flu shot. If you’ve never had one, seek advice from your GP or pharmacist.
If you are still working on site, be sure to keep your work area and equipment clean. Wash/sanitise your hands before touching equipment, and wherever possible, wipe down items which have (or may have) been used by other workers (e.g. phones, keyboards, tools, benches); and remember to keep your hands away from your face.
